Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery
It is very important to understand the difference between reconstructive and cosmetic surgery in order to decide having vaginoplasty or labiaplasty.
Whereas reconstructive surgery heals the function of the body part, cosmetic surgery fundamentally modifies the aesthetics of normal anatomy. You can think about this as nose remodeling. Just as a surgeon performs an operation on inner nasal cavities in order to help you breath or to reshape the nose, a reconstructive surgical intervention carries out reshaping on your vagina just for appearance.
This is a critical distinction, as the surgeons require this intervention for fixing functional problems such as urinary incontinence, but there is no need to have a functional problem for having cosmetic vaginal surgery. Cosmetic vaginal surgery is a surgical procedure which is chosen when the patient would like the shape of their vagina to be renovated for aesthetic reasons.
For example, some vaginoplasty procedures are performed as reconstructive surgery in order to repair vagina when the vagina is erroneous, too short or when parts are missing (such as vaginal agenesis) or there are birth defects. Thus, negative impacts such as problems of inability to urinate as normal, menstruation and perform sexually are removed.
